Year 1 – Miss Miller

Henri Matisse Artwork

Year 1 have created their own print designs inspired by the artwork of Henri Matisse. We used our print templates, a roller and some paint to create our wonderful pieces of art. 

Open Day

Year 1 have had a lovely time exploring computing with our grown-ups on open day. We created our own maps and used the code-and-go mice to follow our paths.

Maths

We have looked at making arrays and equal groups in maths. Year 1 created an array using rows and columns and even created equal groups. We used these equal groups to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. 

Art Gallery

We took a trip to our local art gallery. We learnt lots about the art heritage in Spennymoor and even got to take a look down the mine. 

Musical Notation

Year 1 have been looking at how we can write music. We have created and written our own. We have even tried to perform our music on the triangle!

DT Moving Pictures

In DT we have been looking at using mechanisms to create moving pictures. Year 1 have created their own moving picture of a train to link with our history unit. 

Hoopstarz

We put our hula-hooping skills to the test in a lovely afternoon of Hoopstarz. 

Hopetown

In History we have been learning about George Stephenson. We took a trip to the Hopetown Museum where we learnt all about the steam engine and how it worked. While at the museum, we were able to investigate what the railways and the old railway stations were like. 

Valentine’s Disco

This year’s Valentine’s disco was filled with lots of dancing and even more fun. 

Silent Disco

We took part in a silent disco with GoWell. We had so much fun and can’t wait to do it again!

Growing Plants

As part of our Science unit this half term, we have been looking at plants. We have looked at how to plant and take care of different living things. As a class, we have also looked at the different parts of a flower. Year 1 have observed how their plants have changed over the last few weeks and look forward to taking them home soon!

Dying Materials

We’ve been looking at textiles in art this half term and how we can dye materials using natural dyes. We used materials like onion, spinach, beetroot, tea, coffee and turmeric.

Northumbria Gas Visit

Year 1 had a visit from Northumbria Gas, where we learnt about global warming and how our gas and energy usage is impacted the planet. We had an amazing time doing our experiment, looking at our ‘ice capes’ melting quicker in warmer water.

Library & Local Walk

Our class walked down to the leisure centre. On our way, we looked at the different features of our town. We explored our local library and even chose a book to bring back to school.  

Making Smoothies

In DT we have looked at preparing food. We worked on our food preparation skills and practised our cutting techniques.  Working in groups, we tested different fruits and then designed and made our own smoothies. 

Christmas Festivities

During December we had a lovely time celebrating Christmas with our lovely trip to see Santa, Christmas crafts, Christmas dinner and our Christmas party to round up the festivities. 

Go Well Gymnastics

During the Autumn term we worked with Megan from Go Well on our gymnastic skills. We had so much fun looking at balancing and playing different games.
