Maths
What does Maths look like at Rosa Street?
At Rosa Street Primary School, we believe that mathematics is an essential life skill. Our aim is to help every child develop confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in maths. We want pupils to think logically, solve problems and apply their learning to real-life situations. Children are encouraged to see themselves as mathematicians, understanding how mathematical skills are valuable for everyday life and future careers.
Our Maths Curriculum
We follow a mastery approach to teaching maths, where new concepts are introduced through the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract model. This means children use practical resources to explore ideas, move on to visual representations and then apply their understanding to abstract calculations. This approach ensures every pupil develops a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts.
Daily arithmetic and fluency sessions help children build automatic recall of key number facts and develop connections across different areas of maths. We use mistakes and misconceptions as part of the learning process, encouraging children to persevere, reason and explain their thinking.
Challenge and Application
All pupils are challenged to achieve their best in maths, with opportunities to apply their skills across the curriculum and in real-life contexts. We celebrate effort, accuracy and resilience, helping children to approach challenges with confidence and a positive attitude.
What Children Achieve
By the time they leave Rosa Street, pupils will be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, able to reason mathematically and solve increasingly complex problems. Most importantly, they will approach maths with confidence and curiosity, ready to use their skills in secondary school and beyond.
