Nursery – Mrs J Tugwell
Autumn Term 2024
Settling in
We have been busy welcoming our new starters in nursery and are so impressed with how well they have settled in. Our topic this half term is ‘All About Me.’ We have been getting to new our children and their families and we have created a family tree in nursery with photographs of our families on. We have created our class charter and our birthdays calendar and our children know that they belong to our Rosa Street Nursery family. Our three and four year olds have all drawn their first self-portraits which are proudly displayed in our nursery. Our two year olds have been busy experimenting with mark-making in a range of different ways, using chalks, paint, water and big brushes, to name a few.
Autumn
We are also exploring the seasonal changes of autumn. We went on a walk to Jubilee Park and saw many signs of autumn; including squirrels collecting nuts, pinecones, leaves and conkers. We collected some lovely autumn things and took them back to nursery to explore.
We created faces using pinecones, flowers and leaves for facial features. Aren’t they beautiful?!
We made some hedgehogs with clay and added some small twigs to make prickles! What do you think?
We made some autumn recipes in the mud kitchen, including pinecone soup and conker coffee!
We made soup with some autumn vegetables and practised peeling and chopping the potatoes and carrots. We shared the soup with some bread for a lovely, warming snack!
Reading
We always have a book of the week in each of our key worker groups and we encourage reading as much as possible at home or in nursery! We already have a few favourites that many children know by heart because we have read them every day. ‘Where’s Spot?’ and ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what can you see?’ are the most loved so far! We have a cosy reading area and many of our children love to cuddle up with a book.
Highlights from this half term
Our children have become used to our nursery routines and know to wear an apron in the paint or water areas and to wash their hands before snack.
We have been so impressed by their independence – many children are already pouring their own milk at snack time, collecting their coat by themselves and asking to change their reading books!
Well done, nursery!
Nursery 2023/24
Winter
We have been busy looking for signs of Winter in our nursery garden. We found some ice and snow! We brought the snow inside to see what would happen. Because it was warm inside nursery the snow melted back into water!
Traditional Tales
We have been reading traditional tales this half term. We have read The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Goldilocks and The Three Bears. We have been retelling these stories in our own words and practising the repeated vocabulary such as “Little pig, little in, let me in!” and “Someone’s been eating my porridge!” We also made porridge for our snack.
Maths
In maths we have been learning about the number 3. We have been practising counting to 3 and making three in different ways. In our home corner we have been exploring small, medium and bog objects. We have also look at triangles and counted their 3 sides and 3 corners.
Chinese New Year
We’ve been learning about Chinese New Year. We read the story ‘Maisie’s Chinese New Year’ and learned about some of the things people do to celebrate. We retold the story of The Great Race using puppets. We made dragon puppets and tasted Chinese food.
Autumn Hunt
We have been hunting in our school and nursery grounds for signs of autumn. We collected conkers, acorns, twigs and leaves. Back in the classroom we used them to make patterns and prints in the dough.
Apple Crumble
We made apple crumble with some apples from Mrs Tugwell’s garden. We had to peel and chop the apples, mix the crumble and sprinkle it over the apples. We enjoyed the crumble for our snack! We bake every week in nursery and make our own snack whenever we can.
Diwali Clay
We made clay diva lamps at Divali, using our fine motor skills to smooth the clay.
School Exploration
We have been having great fun exploring our school grounds.
New Nursery
We have had great fun exploring our areas of provision in our brand new nursery.
